Estate duty and executor fees: what your family will actually pay

The first R3.5 million of an estate is exempt from estate duty. Above that, duty is 20%, and 25% on the portion above R30 million.

Executor fees can be up to 3.5% of gross assets plus VAT. Planning ahead — and negotiating fees upfront — can save your family a meaningful amount.
